UConn forward Ayanna Patterson out for year after knee surgery

STORRS, Conn. -- Connecticut's injury problems continued as sophomore forward Ayanna Patterson will miss the rest of the season after knee surgery this week.

The school announced her status Friday. She had not appeared in a game this season for the 17th-ranked Huskies.

Patterson is a 6-foot-2 forward from Fort Wayne, Indiana. She played in 30 games a season ago, averaging just over two points and two rebounds.

Patterson had surgery on her left knee Thursday. She's not the first UConn player lost for the season with an injury. Last month, star guard Azzi Fudd tore the ACL and medial meniscus in her right knee at practice.

UConn coach Geno Auriemma said Patterson has dealt with patellar tendinitis since high school. She decided with the team's medical staff on surgery to take care of the condition, Auriemma said.

"We anticipate she'll make a full recovery," he said. "We look forward to having her back with the team on the court."

The Huskies (6-3) face No. 18 Louisville (9-1) on Saturday.
